LED indicator lamp and observe it while running a test. It should be a nice, repeatable blink/pulse -- if it looks good but the problem persists, would tend to think the injector has an issue, clogged, injector coil is starting to fail, etc. I'd tap in a (6ft or so) line down by the ECU and run it up to the engine bay to avoid exposing any wires up there. Other end of LED test lamp goes to the + terminal of battery. Really simple circuit to wire up and try. If you don't know how to do this -- just drop me an email, can explain further...
